David Essex’s second collection of covers, following on from the masterful Cover Shot, does not, sadly, come close to matching the majesty of its predecessor. Less an album, more a simple gathering of cuts recorded at different periods throughout the ’90s, it revisits a handful of numbers from the original set (the title track, “First Cut Is the Deepest,” picks up on the 1994 hit version of “True Love Ways,” and then meanders around some very pleasant songbooks without once demanding more of Essex than he could comfortably turn in. Cover Shot impressed because of the interpretive powers it called upon; Everlasting Love disappoints because it could have been recorded in the bathtub — albeit one that secretes a full band and orchestra somewhere between the soap dish and the rubber ducks. It’s a pleasant album to be sure, but Essex is capable of far more than this. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide

“Tuck Everlasting is the story of a girl named Winnie and a family who she meets, the Tucks. The Tucks have a secret, they’re immortal. They drank water from a spring that was actually a fountain of youth. Till the end of time, they will stay that way. Winnie falls in love with one of the Tucks, Jesse, a “17″ year old boy who shares the same feelings for her. Scared of death, Winnie must choose between being immortal and being with Jesse or following the circle of life and dying someday. The Tucks try to teach her how she shouldn’t fear death, how they would give anything to die. It teaches the importance and understanding of life and death. It shows that you should not fear death, but to fear an unlived life.”

Love Affair was one of the great, all-too-unheralded pop bands of the late ’60s in Britain, not a million miles in approach from the Small Faces — and in Steve Ellis they had a soulful belter who was close to the genius of Steve Marriott. “Everlasting Love” was the big hit, a wonderful slice of music that crossed and recrossed the line between soul and pop, and which still stands proudly after all these years. But it’s far from being the only excellent work here. The covers of “Hush,” “Tobacco Road,” “Handbags and Gladrags,” and “The First Cut Is the Deepest” positively steam, while “Rainbow Valley,” although a formulaic retread of the big hit, still has plenty going for it. Perhaps the big problem for the band was that they were tagged simply as a pop band, so when they attempted to break that mold, they weren’t taken seriously. That’s a shame, as “The Tree,” which veers into both psychedelia and prog rock (close neighbors in those days) is an excellent piece of work, and “Once Upon a Season” offers a few echoes of Traffic. That’s not to say everything is wonderful: “Could I Be Dreaming?” and “The Tale of Two Bitters” are readily dispensable, and a couple of other tracks are simply nondescript. But the ratio of good to bad is extremely high, and Steve Ellis is convincing throughout. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music GuidePerformers: Maurice Bacon – Drums; Auguste Eadon – Flute, Vocals; Stephan Ellis – Vocals; Morgan Fisher – Keyboards; Lynton Guest – Keyboards; Mick Jackson – Bass
