Tech, who has a record, just wants to get his GED and make a decent living, while Noah plans to use his college scholarship t… |

J.J.! $16.98 J.J.! is considered to be J.J. Johnson’s first big-band album, at least as a leader, although the classic bop trombonist had worked earlier with the orchestras of Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. Six of the arrangements are by Johnson with the remainder by Oliver Nelson and Gary McFarland. Although there are brief spots along the way for pianist Hank Jones, flügelhornist Clark Terry, and flutist Jerome Richardson, Johnson’s trombone is the dominant voice on every selection. The music is solidly played if not overly memorable, modern forward-looking mainstream jazz that features Johnson in excellent form. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Raymond Beckenstein – Reeds; Jim Buffington – French Horn; Jerry Dodgion – Reeds; Harvey Estrin – Reeds; Bud Johnson – Reeds; Tommy Mitchell – Trombone (Bass); Oliver Nelson – Reeds; Jerome Richardson – Reeds; Bill Stanley – Tuba; Tony Studd – Trombone (Bass); Jimmy Cleveland – Trombone; Bob Cranshaw – Bass; Hank Jones – Piano; Thad Jones – Trumpet; Jimmy Maxwell – Trumpet; Ernie Royal – Trumpet; Grady Tate – Drums; Clark Terry – Trumpe |

J.J.! [Bonus Tracks] $15.56 The Mosaic label, which has become famous as jazz’s number one reissue company, usually puts together large multi-disc boxes full of valuable music. J.J.! is part of Mosaic’s first batch of conventional single-CD reissues. This is considered J.J. Johnson’s first big band album, at least as a leader, although the classic bop trombonist had worked earlier with the orchestras of Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. Six of the arrangements are by Johnson with the remainder by Oliver Nelson, Gary McFarland, and two previously unreleased cuts by Tom McIntosh. Although there are brief spots along the way for pianist Hank Jones, flügelhornist Clark Terry, and flutist Jerome Richardson, J.J. Johnson’s trombone is the dominant voice on every selection. The music is solidly played if not overly memorable, modern forward-looking mainstream jazz that features Johnson in excellent form. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

The Total J.J. Johnson $16.98 All but one selection (“Blue”) from this 1966 big-band album has been reissued on CD. J.J. Johnson, the main soloist throughout on trombone, also contributed all the compositions and arrangements for the 13- and 14-piece bands heard on the three sessions. There are short spots for some of the other players, particularly pianist Hank Jones, but the emphasis is on the arranged ensembles, making this project an excellent example of Johnson’s often-overlooked writing talents. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: J.J. Johnson – Trombone |

Music in Early Christian Literature $39.99 “This book provides a collection of some 400 passages on music from early Christian literature – New Testament to c. 450 AD – newly translated from the original Greek, Latin, and Syriac. As there are no musical sources of the period, music historians must rely upon remarks about music in literary sources to gain some knowledge of early Christian liturgical music. This volume makes a large and representative collection of the material conveniently available. The passages are arranged chronologically and regionally in eleven chapters with brief commentary. An introduction sets out the major subjects and themes of the original source material.” |

The Great J.J. Jackson $7.98 J.J. Jackson, all 300 pounds of him, was indeed a great ‘60s soul man, one of Otis Redding’s rivals as a grainy, gritty vocalist and a fine songwriter to boot, and this 1966 album is the clear high point of his career, featuring the hit •But It’s Alright• and his own version of •Come and See Me (I’m Your Man)•, which the Pretty Things borrowed for one of their best sides. Also includes •Try Me; That Ain’t Right; You’ve Got Me Dizzy; A Change Is Gonna Come; I Dig Girls; The Stones That I Throw; Give Me Back the Love; Ain’t Too Proud to Beg; Love Is a Hurting Thing; Boogaloo Baby•, and •Let It Out•. A •Collectors’ Choice Music• exclusive, with notes by Gene Sculatti exploring the career of this under-appreciated soul singer. Out July 14! |

J.J.’s Broadway $11.98 This is one of the more obscure J.J. Johnson LPs. On six of the ten songs, the great trombonist is joined by four others, while the remaining four tracks (the main reasons to search for this album) feature him in a quartet with pianist Hank Jones, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Walter Perkins. Johnson’s writing on the larger group pieces lifts the material, which is all taken from Broadway shows, while his playing on the quartet tracks is up to his usual level. Some of the songs are now forgotten, but “My Favorite Things,” “Make Someone Happy” and “Put on a Happy Face” are exceptions. This album has some good music, but it will be very difficult to find. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Paul Faulise – Trombone (Bass); Richard Davis – Bass; Urbie Green – Trombone; Chuck Israels – Bass; J.J. Johnson – Trombone; Hank Jones – Piano; Lou McGarity – Trombone; Tommy Mitchell – Trombone; Walter Perkins – Drums |
